Chapter Twenty-Two

Formalities

~~Jasper~~

The next day we’d left on a three-game road trip. The team won two out of three, and I only got into one fight this time. I had an empty-net goal to add to my division-leading total so far.

Ice’s observations regarding my issues had gotten to me. Even if I didn’t agree with most of what he said, I did think about his words, especially when I recognized some of my thinking was similar to my father’s. I never wanted to be like that man.

But I wasn’t my father’s son. Damn it. I didn’t believe a man’s needs were more important than a woman’s. I was more progressive than that.

My attitude toward the horses was entirely based on economics and had nothing to do with male vs. female careers. A career with horses wasn’t lucrative no matter how good of a rider a person was.

I felt somewhat smug regarding my assessment of the situation, maybe even self-righteous.

We’d landed in Seattle a little after midnight. The team had Sunday off as we didn’t play again until Tuesday. I’d gone straight home and crawled into bed. Road trips wore me out, and sleepless nights hadn’t helped, too many clashing thoughts running through my head and visions of Blaire.

I was so exhausted I fell into a deep, dreamless sleep and didn’t wake up until close to noon. I got up, worked out, and found myself at a loss for what to do next. Several of the guys went golfing, but I wasn’t in the mood. A few others headed to the mountains for a hike. Again, not in the mood.

What the fuck was I in the mood for?

I didn’t need to answer that question. I knew the answer.

Frustrated with my inability to exercise self-control when it came to Blaire, I had to get out of this condo where memories of her were all too real. After a twenty-minute search for my keys, I hopped in my Hummer. It was a nice day for a drive. I cranked the music and sang along, drowning out thoughts of Blaire with my off-key voice. I’d driven several miles before I realized I was in the neighborhood of the horse barn. Total coincidence. Not planned. Nope, not at all.

I should’ve taken the road in the opposite direction, but I didn’t. I stopped at a small strip mall and grabbed a pizza and a bouquet of flowers. Weak-willed where she was concerned, I wasn’t able to help myself. I hadn’t seen her in a week, and I needed to see her if for no other reason than hoping the sight of her would satisfy my hungry libido.

When I arrived at the barn, the parking lot was empty. I recalled Blaire mentioning they were closed on Sunday to give everyone a day off. She probably wasn’t here. I deflated somewhat as I considered that very real possibility. Maybe she’d met some rich horse guy, and he swept her off her feet? They might be spending this beautiful day on Puget Sound in his yacht.
